“It was as if she’d been waiting for us to remember.”
Sometimes, fate has a way of reuniting hearts destined to be together.
Angel and her husband walked into Southern Pines Animal Shelter expecting nothing more than a chance to spend time with some dogs and brighten their day. But as they visited with the dogs in the kennels, a quiet moment of connection changed everything.
A dog named “Patty Melt” caught Angel’s eye. While some of the dogs bounced and barked with excitement, Patty Melt rested quietly by the gate, her gaze calm and steady. There was something about her—a quiet warmth, a familiarity—that Angel couldn’t ignore.
“We weren’t planning to adopt,” Angel says, “but when I walked past her kennel, she was just chilling against the gate. When the staff got her out for us, she was so playful and sweet; she jumped right on me and got so excited.”
Angel didn’t just feel a tug at her heart—she felt a pull that wouldn’t let go. There was no question. By the end of the day, “Patty Melt” was on her way home.
That night, the pieces began to fall into place. As Angel and her husband watched their new dog settle in, they couldn’t shake the feeling that they knew her. The resemblance to a dog they’d once cared for but was separated from by circumstances out of their control was uncanny. The same expressive eyes. The same gentle nature. The same unique skin tag. Tentatively, they called her by the dog’s name, Sadie. The reaction was instant.
“She lit up,” Angel recalls, her voice catching. “It was as if she’d been waiting for us to remember. I was a sobbing mess of joy to have my baby back. And it was all thanks to Southern Pines.”
Today, Sadie is more than a cherished family member—she’s a certified therapy and emotional support dog. With her signature “Presley grin” (a sideways, Elvis-like smile) and playful spirit, she spreads love wherever she goes. Whether strutting through the Southern Pines Healthy Pet Clinic in costumes and booties or comforting someone in need, Sadie is a living reminder of the power of second chances.
Sadie’s journey—and her joyful reunion—was made possible by the compassionate work of Southern Pines and the generosity of donors like you.
