how to TNR
Gather Supplies
- This includes, but is not limited to: humane live trap, cat food for bait, newspaper to line the trap, and an old towel or blanket to cover the trap.
- Test the trip plate to ensure it is functioning properly before placing the trap.
- Place about one tablespoon of bait at the very back of the trap so the cat must step on the trip plate to reach the food. You may choose to put the food on a safe, disposable container (such as a plastic lid or paper plate).
- Place trap on level ground in a quiet area. Beware of placing a metal trap on hot or cold pavement, which could cause the trap to become painful for the cat's paws.
- Approach the trap slowly and calmly as to not frighten the cat and cause further stress.
- Do not open the trap or attempt to touch the cat. The cat may thrash around due to fear, and covering the trap often calms them down quickly.
- A trapped cat is a vulnerable cat. Move the animal to a temperature-controlled holding area as soon as possible.
- Transport the animal to the clinic to be spayed/neutered.
- Ensure the trap is stable during transportation and not left exposed to the elements, such as an open truck bed, or left in a hot vehicle.
- Please read our Post-Operative instructions for community cats here.
- Sanitize and return live trap to the clinic.
